SOTW - MommaGoddess

Look at Me Necklace in Teal
Introducing Trudy J. Miller of Momma Goddess Treasures, the Etsy Twitter Team's Shop of the Week!

Trudy creates jewelry for anyone who wants to "look great and feel like a goddess"! She designs for a variety of clients that surely includes you! Many of her items are wedding inspired and she even covers the tween and teen aged girl: "I do love creating for my daughters, Shilo and Tara." Her pieces reflect her wild imagination and her love of 'unique...bling...and FUN!" She is further inspired by Mother Nature, who sets her 'creative juices flowing"! With over 200 sales in her shop, she has struct a fashion chord with many!

Her Twitter advice emphasizes the personal touch: "Get to know your fellow tweeters and develop a rapport with them. Try to have some interesting things to tweet about, something that would draw more people to your link."

She has been influenced by some skilled and talented artisans. "I have gleaned much information from many people. I love Sharilyn Miller and her techniques; I strive to be more artistic like Christi Friesen and her whimsy; and I will continue to try to learn new tips and techniques from everyone that is willing to teach. Kathy Kaberline of KK Originals has taught me many wire techniques and opens my mind to new ideas daily." She has great respect for those who "finish [their work] with love and pride".

You might be surprised to know that Trudy has an avid love of CHL hockey! "I try to never miss a game and have been known to follow them on the road." Trudy is even the Colorado Eagles sports writer for the Examiner!

If she had $1 million to spend on others, she would build homeless shelters for people and no-kill shelters for animals. "Marry them [homeless pets] up with the homeless people and everyone would have someone to love. Okay, I guess I better plan to build them next to each other for convenience." Generous and practical, too! Hopefully some civic planner is reading this!

SOTW - whimsyfish

Fido the Star Dog Beaded Pin
Meet Max (aka Maxine Forward) of whimsyfish, this week's Etsy Twitter Team's Shop of the Week!

Max says "I like the season changes. They remind me to mix things up a bit." And so inventory shows! She creates beautiful jewelry and knitted goods. Her jewelry, both beaded and strung, often from repurposed/recycled objects". "I love to use found objects and am constantly lurking around flea markets and antique shops. " As she lives in New England, that provides her ample opportunity for antiquing!

Her interests extend beyond recycling. I asked her what she would do if she won $1 million and had to give it away; her response, "I would give every penny...to the Nature Conservancy"

She's adept with knitting needles, too, offering a variety of scarves made from the highest quality yarns. She also is very talented with teeny knitting needles, making tiny sweaters and mittens for Christmas tree ornaments!

She says, "My most influential teacher was the immensely talented John Grillo who I had as a painting instructor at UMass all those years ago. He was a sharp critic, but always kind and very generous with his time. I love geometric designs and he helped me develop in the direction. I also want to give a big shout out to the wonderful ladies at my local knitting group. They have really helped me to become a better knitter." She also may be influenced by some of her favorite artists: Botticelli and VanGogh. "I love lots of color!," she says.

Another influence might be travel. Max once took a trip to the Soviet Union for three weeks. "Best thing I saw there - the fantastic Saint Basil's Cathedral in Red Square. You know - the one with the onion domes! It was a pure delight."

SOTW - KnittingGuru

Romantic
The Etsy Twitter Team proudly presents this week's shop of the week: KnittingGuru!

KnittingGuru products are targeted to people who love to wear designs that are both one of a kind and flattering to the wearer, and made from fine quality fibers. Her creations use natural fibers for their durability, luxurious feel, and earth friendly sustainability. Her description "ecoChic" is truly accurate.

KnittingGuru products differ from other knitwear and crochet on Etsy because they are all original KnittingGuru designs, meticulously crafted, made to fit and flatter, use fine yarns and distinctive stitches. An unusual twist: she often combines both knitting and crochet in one garment and the result is a classy and unique garment.

As a member of the Etsy Twitter Team, Twitter is a key feature of her market visibility: Her advice: Twitter is a great way to get your pieces seen by lots of people, but it’s also important to write about other things than your products. KnittingGuru has observed that her Twitter followers respond to discounts limited to Twitter contacts.

KnittingGuru is based in her hometown, New York City. She's a big museum visitor and says, "There are so many artists who I love and who have influenced me that it’s exceptionally hard to choose just one. I have always been drawn to Van Gogh for his range of style, artistic development and especially for his use of color, composition and texture." In addition, "Living in New York City has a profound influence on my work, creativity and inventory. NYC yarn stores tend to be expensive boutiques by and large, so I get most of my yarns online and from wholesale suppliers. However, I still spend hours in the wonderful bead stores, fabric and supply stores that abound here in the garment district. I love to walk, so I'm exposed to the amazing styles both in stores and on people in the street. New York is always changing, so there’s an ongoing fashion show all the time. In addition, I’m very influenced by nature so wandering through Central Park and being surrounded by water yield many design ideas. The opera, ballet, concert halls and theater are all inspirations too."

On a personal note, she shares that her mother taught her to knit and crochet when she was only 4 years old! She says, "I would have to give her the title of most influential. Without that very early training, I would be a totally different artist now. Because I learned to knit and crochet before I could read, I’ve always seen both crafts as a starting place for design and have never used other people’s patterns. Also, when you learn things that early in life, they become who you are and an integral part of your existence. I knit and crochet all the time. I often knit even when when I’m reading, and certainly when I’m socializing, watching a movie, or riding in a car, train or airplane. It’s the background (or foreground depending on complexity of design) to everything else in my life."

Green Victorian Ruffled Bolero
A Special Discount from KnittingGuru to YOU:
"I’m so delighted to be Shop of the Week on EtsyTwitter where I’ve been a member for quite awhile. I’d be happy to offer 20% off anything in my shop for this week. Fortunately Valentine’s Day is approaching, so that will be a good time to shop for the many romantic pieces I have. To get your discount, write to me at Etsy (convo) first giving the code EtsyTwitterTeamSOTW and what you want and I'll post a revised listing(s) for you reflecting your discount. I hope you find things you like!"

Shop of the Week - MoonlightDreams

Hat - Gray with Brim, Strap and Button - UNISEX
The Etsy Twitter Team presents this weeks' featured shop, MoonlightDreams and it's creator, Barbara Gordon. Barbara crochets a variety of accessories from hats to lacey gloves, from cowls to flower pins. Her items are designed for young adults and both men and women. Barbara says "I feel that my products are stylish, without being 'over the top', and I painstakingly check, and recheck my items before I ship them out. I want them to be fashionable, functional, and extremely durable, at affordable prices."

Barbara lives in sunny Southern California, where the weather greatly influences her approach to business. "I love making warm and cuddly hats and accessories, but the cold season is very short here. Etsy has been my saving grace, allowing me to market my products to the folks in colder climates". Etsy extends her season to include both the Northern and Southern hemisphere (yes! she ships internationally). She focuses on preparing new designs and products during the warmer months.

Barabara learned to crochet at the tender age of 8 years old. "I had a babysitter who wisely taught me to engage in something that would hold my interest and keep me focused. Crocheting has been a lifelong friend to me, and I’ve often thought of that lady and have always felt grateful to her for taking the time to teach a child a craft."

While Barbara's day job is neither artistic nor creative, the work she creates for Etsy allows her to "keep balance and peace in my world". Many an Etsian will understand that!

Barbara's Twitter advice to new tweeters: "Post interesting bits of news intermingled with sale information, and your shop and team promotions. Keep people interested in following you."

I asked Barbara: If you were stranded alone on a dessert island, what 5 things would you want with you? Her response:

"1.Yarn! Because as long as I have yarn with me I’m never bored.
2. My camera, so I could create beautiful pictures.
3. TV (I’m an addict) - I know it’s an island, but I can dream!
4. Water - because without water there is no life.
5. Internet connection - I love being connected to people."
