How To Make An Etsy Mini For ANY Shop

By Vickie Porter from In My Head Studios

Etsy: Your place to buy & sell all things handmade
inmyheadstudios.etsy.com

An Etsy Mini is a way to have items from your Etsy shop show up on any page you can put the HTML code for it. It's a very useful tool for blogging and promoting.

When you want an Etsy Mini for someone the usual way to go about it is to have to ask the shop keeper for their code. But if you know how to read, it is possible to create an Etsy Mini for any shop. All you need is your Etsy Mini code, the shop name and the shop ID number – which is found in the right sidebar of the shop’s profile page.

Ready to get your hands dirty with a little HTML? Below I show you how to change your Etsy Mini - the Flash version of the HTML code – to another shop’s Etsy Mini.

1. First thing to do is go to “Your Etsy” then click “Etsy Mini”.
2. Make selections for the options based on how you want the finished Etsy Mini for the other shop to show up. Choose "Items from my shop".
3. Copy the Flash version of the HTML by highlighting all of it and doing a regular copy of the text.
4. Paste this code into a document that you can edit: Word or Text Editor, for example.
5. Go to the shop you want the Etsy Mini code for and copy their shop ID number from their profile page.
6. Paste this at the end of your document so we can come back to it.
7. Highlight and copy the shop name – inmyheadstudios for example.
8. Paste that to the bottom of your document as well.
9. Now it’s time to switch the code up. All you have to do is replace the shop ID number and shop name (user name) in your Etsy Mini code.

Here is my Etsy Mini code:
<table style="text-align: center;"><tr><td><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.etsy.com/flash/spots/etsy_mini.swf?user_id=5354473&user_name=inmyheadstudios&item_source=shop&item_size=gallery&rows=2&columns=2" width="354" height="362"><param name="movie" value="http://www.etsy.com/flash/spots/etsy_mini.swf?user_id=5354473&user_name=inmyheadstudios&item_source=shop&item_size=gallery&rows=2&columns=2" /></object></td></tr><tr><td><a style="color:#D35701; font-size: 14px; text-decoration: none; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight:bold" href="http://www.etsy.com">Etsy: Your place to buy &amp; sell all things handmade</a><br/><a style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size:12px; color:#0192B5; text-decoration: none;" href="http://inmyheadstudios.etsy.com">inmyheadstudios.etsy.com</a></td></tr></table>
Wait! Don't run off yet because the code above looks like gobbledeegook to you!! Stay with me! This is EASY!

In this example I’m going to change the code to make a Mini for my good friend Jenco13.

My user ID number (5354473) shows up twice in the HTML code as shown below:
<table style="text-align: center;"><tr><td><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.etsy.com/flash/spots/etsy_mini.swf?user_id=5354473&user_name=inmyheadstudios&item_source=shop&item_size=gallery&rows=2&columns=2" width="354" height="362"><param name="movie" value="http://www.etsy.com/flash/spots/etsy_mini.swf?user_id=5354473&user_name=inmyheadstudios&item_source=shop&item_size=gallery&rows=2&columns=2" /></object></td></tr><tr><td><a style="color:#D35701; font-size: 14px; text-decoration: none; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight:bold" href="http://www.etsy.com">Etsy: Your place to buy &amp; sell all things handmade</a><br/><a style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size:12px; color:#0192B5; text-decoration: none;" href="http://inmyheadstudios.etsy.com">inmyheadstudios.etsy.com</a></td></tr></table>
All you have to do is switch out the user ID number for the other shop. Simple copy and paste action. As you can see from Jen's profile page her shop ID number is 5555413.

10. The “user name” shows up in the HTML code in four places as shown below:

<table style="text-align: center;"><tr><td><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.etsy.com/flash/spots/etsy_mini.swf?user_id=5354473&user_name=inmyheadstudios&item_source=shop&item_size=gallery&rows=2&columns=2" width="354" height="362"><param name="movie" value="http://www.etsy.com/flash/spots/etsy_mini.swf?user_id=5354473&user_name=inmyheadstudios&item_source=shop&item_size=gallery&rows=2&columns=2" /></object></td></tr><tr><td><a style="color:#D35701; font-size: 14px; text-decoration: none; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight:bold" href="http://www.etsy.com">Etsy: Your place to buy &amp; sell all things handmade</a><br/><a style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size:12px; color:#0192B5; text-decoration: none;" href="http://inmyheadstudios.etsy.com">inmyheadstudios.etsy.com</a></td></tr></table>
Again all you have to do is switch out the shop user name for the other shop. Simple copy and paste action.

I switched out the information from Jenco13’s shop and now I have the code for her Etsy Mini:

<table style="text-align: center;"><tr><td><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.etsy.com/flash/spots/etsy_mini.swf?user_id=5555413&user_name= Jenco13 &item_source=shop&item_size=gallery&rows=2&columns=2" width="354" height="362"><param name="movie" value="http://www.etsy.com/flash/spots/etsy_mini.swf?user_id=5555413&user_name= Jenco13 &item_source=shop&item_size=gallery&rows=2&columns=2" /></object></td></tr><tr><td><a style="color:#D35701; font-size: 14px; text-decoration: none; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight:bold" href="http://www.etsy.com">Etsy: Your place to buy &amp; sell all things handmade</a><br/><a style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size:12px; color:#0192B5; text-decoration: none;" href="http:// Jenco13.etsy.com"> Jenco13.etsy.com</a></td></tr></table>
This is what Jenco13's Etsy Mini now looks like:

Etsy: Your place to buy & sell all things handmade

See? That wasn't all that hard! Knowing a bit about HTML can be a big help!

To see more simple HTML you can use go to this Google support article about HTML. This article adds more to what the last one showed.

Hope this helps you out when you need an Etsy Mini for another shop!

Shop Talk Friday with Purple Lemon Designs

Guest Blogger:
Kelly Rinehart of PurpleLemonDesigns.etsy.com

Originally posted to her blog in July 2009

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, I am glad you decided to join me for my 3rd installment of “Marketing My Etsy Shop”. We have already covered using Twitter and Facebook as marketing tools in Part 1, and using business cards, an elevator speech and your shop’s packaging in Part 2. Today, we are going to talk about my experiences with Etsy Teams, an email newsletter, as well as blogging. Let’s chat, shall we?
Etsy Teams
I am on three Etsy teams, Team Etsy Mississippi, The Etsy Twitter Team, and The Etsy Wedding Team. I have “met” so many wonderful people through these teams. I have also learned a ton from many of the members.
So, how did I start with Etsy Teams?
Well I first started with my home state’s team. I had no idea what teams were, but I wanted to find out. There had been lots of talk on the forums about teams, so I needed to know more.
A state team is a natural fit for any seller in the USA (I think). I know my state’s membership is open to any one living in MS with a shop on Etsy. I really enjoyed the team camaraderie, and once people got to know me through our Yahoo group, I made sales to many of the members.
While having a great Mississippi team experience, I joined Twitter. Soon after, I stumbled upon the Etsy Twitter Team. I joined up and it is a great team to be a part of. It is probably the most active team I am on because we are all on Twitter so much. We promote one shop each week, we have a very active Google group, and my teammates are experts at getting Etsy Treasuries (which we also tweet about)! I had never been in a Treasury before joining a team (thanks Michelle!), and I am still not sure how all that works, but being a part of great Treasuries has been such an honor since joining a team.
A few months ago, I started selling some of my wedding items. Since I had such good experiences with teams, I applied to be accepted as a member of The Etsy Wedding Team. This team has been a great experience just like the other two. I really like the focused nature of the team. We all design wedding items, so we have lots in common. This team has become very active in the last few weeks, so I am excited to see where it takes us!
A few tips about joining teams:
  • Just as anything else in life, you get out of it what you put into it.
  • Don’t be shy!
  • Just do it.
E-Newsletters
I have put together e-newsletters for my places of employment, but it never dawned on me to put one together for Purple Lemon Designs… until a few months ago. I have only put a few out, but I know that people are clicking through (thanks to Google Analytics). I use Mail Chimp to put my email blasts together. It is really easy to use, and it is free if you send to 100 or less people at a time (up to 6 times a month). You can also customize your blast to look like your blog or your Etsy shop. I know that there are other great services available such as Constant Contact and iContact. I can’t speak about these services, because I haven’t had the pleasure of using them.
This is just another way to contact your customers. Be careful who you send your blast to… you don’t want to violate spam legislation. I only send to people who opt in to my newsletter through a link on my blog, my website’s contact form and my Etsy Shop Announcement. Some people send to people that have purchased from them, but I don’t feel comfortable doing that unless they opt in. The great thing about Mail Chimp or other services like it, they will manage your email list for you. I have a page that is generated by Mail Chimp that subscribers use to sign up. It links directly to my blog. Cool, right?
Blog
Obviously since you are reading this, you know that I blog. Many of you probably blog, too. A few tips that I can give about blogging are:
  • Create an editorial schedule – Readers like to know what you are going to be posting on a regular basis. I have a few different series that I feature on my blog (such as Terrific Tuesdays and Lemony Fresh Etsy Sellers), so my readers know what is coming up.
  • Post on a regular basis – I know that I get tired of keeping a blog that never updates in my daily reads. I don’t necessary mean that you have to post everyday; that is up to you. I am saying that your readers will be more likely to come back to see you if you maybe post once a week or more. Maybe even post on the same day each week. I know that Word Press blogs have this nifty feature where you can schedule your posts. This has really helped me post on a regular basis. I usually write blog posts in spurts, mostly on the weekend. So if I can space out when my posts are published, that is really helpful with my schedule.
  • Read other people’s blogs and comment – This will help make connections with other people across the internet. Always link your blog to your comments. Lots of people like to follow the trails of comment links… You may even gain more readers this way.
  • All posts are better with pictures, especially if you are writing a tutorial.
  • Make sure to add your Etsy Mini to your sidebar.
  • Make it fun!
I hope you have enjoyed my posts about Marketing my Etsy shop. Let me know if you have questions by posting in the comments below.
Toodles!
Etsy OWLS Trunk Show!!
The Etsy Twitter Team is teaming up once again to cross promote another Etsy Street Team! This time it is with the Etsy Off The Wall Ladies (OWLS) whose focus is, well, everything! This street team is for wild and crazy Etsyians who don't always walk the straight and narrow! Fun! Fun! I thought this would be fitting because we use the blue tweety Twitter bird a lot and OWLS are birds, too. Hoot hoot! Ok, I probably didn’t have to explain that. Just sayin’.
I digress!
The Scoop: They are having a big Etsy-style Trunk Show on Wednesday, August 19th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm EST in the Etsy Virtual Labs (room TBA). Lots of great items will be featured and tons of free stuff and swag will be awarded! Don’t want to miss the swag, do you?
What's a trunk show? In this case, a trunk show is an online craft show, with sellers showcasing a variety of items. Participating sellers will be offering special discounts in their shops, and the team will also be giving away a variety of "door" prizes throughout the show.
It's never too early to get started on holiday shopping or buy yourself a little something special either. Avoid the retail madness and support the handmade movement.
So go set that calendar alarm on your iPhone, put a Post-it next to your monitor, write it on your hand, or yell it from the rooftops. You. Do. Not. Want. To. Miss. It.
Shop of the Week: Safiya Beauty
Everything about Nailah Safiya Blades’ shop at SafiyaBeauty.etsy.com is sumptuous. She creates natural bath and body products that merge natural and eco-friendly ingredients with luxurious indulgence. You can moisturize, polish, make suds, lather, and soak with her products.
Her shop announcement says, “Safiya’s philosophy is to provide you with the finest, purest natural and organic products, but never at the risk of neglecting your need to feel beautiful and smell delicious. Our products contain only what is absolutely necessary to make the absolute best product for your body without sacrificing your desire to feel fantastic.” It makes me want to check out her shop for something that will make me feel soft and pretty. I’m sure I won’t be disappointed!!
Nailah wants you to know that she works “very hard to make sure that my products are made with the very best ingredients I can find. I think as a culture, we pay very close attention to what we put into our bodies but not so much what we put on them, which is just as important. Because of that, all of my products are made with natural ingredients and contain no parabens, phthalates, or harsh preservatives. I also strive to provide an environmentally friendly product and go to great lengths to ensure this.
“I’m an indulgent person and I think that shows through with my products. I really enjoy creating products that will transport my consumer to their own little private spa. I love using creamy butters and skin-loving vegetable oils because they create such opulent products. I’m also slightly inspired by food! All of my bath bombs are cookies or cupcakes – I have a major sweet tooth.”
You can even see the indulgence in her products through her photos. The way the butters peak up firmly, you can tell they have a lot of body to them and will be luxuriously creamy.
Her favorite thing about her craft is “how the finished product makes others feel. I love watching someone try my body butters for the first time and see their eyes light up as they rub it into their skin or as they smell the scents. That’s definitely my favorite part!”
About Twitter: “I love Twitter! I think my biggest piece of Twitter advice would be to make sure it’s not all about you. I try to ‘RT’ [retweet] others or share articles that others may find helpful. I also use Twitter to announce any specials on my shop or when I have new blog posts.”
Are you looking for the perfect gift or favor? Custom and wholesale orders are welcomed by Safiya Beauty! They offer private labeling for weddings, showers and parties.
Follow her on Twitter @safiyabeauty
Read her blog at www.safiyabeauty.wordpress.com
Special for this Week: 15% off your entire order – just mention “EtsyTwitter” in the seller’s notes and she will reimburse you via PayPal refund.
Go Green with the Etsy Twitter Team
It’s time for our eco-party!! The Etsy Twitter Team has rounded up our best and brightest eco-friendly handmade items and supplies all for your enjoyment. Step right up and see how you can support handmade and the environment at the same time. Win-win for all involved!!
Why is buying handmade and environmentally friendly an important thing to do? The two go hand in hand. Buying handmade items supports small local businesses that do not have a huge impact on the environment like major corporations do. The accumulative effects of mass production contribute to global warming and pollution. You have not used up gas to go to the store to buy a gift and that gift is handmade and one-of-a-kind. Buying handmade helps us to reconnect with actual people in ways we don’t when we buy at “big-box” stores. That connection fosters community and community fosters care and concern for the world around us. So help us support our artists and our Earth!
Many of these shops have created items just for this event. Most are offering great sales like 10% off or free shipping. Take a look through the list and check them out!
Along with this event we are hosting a scavenger hunt. Hidden in 8 shops on this list is the graphic you see above. It’s hidden in one of their shop listings. Find them and email the URL to etsytwitterteam@gmail.com. If you blog about this event or tweet it on Twitter leave a comment on this post for extra entries into the contest - one per blog post and one per tweet. I will choose 5 winners at random for eco-friendly prizes at the end of the week. Contest ends at midnight July 27th. Watch the blog tomorrow for photos of the prizes! They’re really neat!
Now go on and shop till your green self drops!!
